Pixel, iPhone, Galaxy, oh my! Why pay a premium when every phone runs the same apps? | ZDNet

When you start talking about a $400 to $600 difference in price, the mystique and perceived advantages of a brand and OS platform look a bit silly when they all run the same applications.

Google Pixel 2 price, release date and features

As the Pixel 2 has been built by HTC for Google, it also features the squeeze sensor we saw in the HTC U11. You can use this to launch Google Assistant at any point, with a smart squeeze detection meaning you shouldn't accidentally activate Assistant when you're just holding the handset.

Google leaks its Pixel 2 XL design minutes before event

Google’s Pixel 2 XL is expected to include a curved QHD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, either 64GB or 128GB of storage, a USB-C port, and an E-SIM slot. Sonos embraces voice control era with Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant | ZDNet

For Sonos, which began as an insular system that didn't even use standard Wi-Fi protocols, the moves collectively represent an opening up necessitated not only by the market but by technical need. While Apple, for example, has imbued Siri with a broad knowledge of TV and movie knowledge for calling up different kinds of entertainment on Apple TV, Sonos hasn't pursued its own natural intelligence. If you were to send Sonos a musical query that demanded some metadata finesse such as, "Play me some music from artists influenced by Ella Fitzgerald," it would have to rely on the smarts of one of the services it supports. These are poised to increase beyond the 80 currently on the menu as the company will launch a platform that allows any service to get onto Sonos; the company will also launch a certification badge.

Our Google Pixel 2 Liveblog Is Right Here

Are you ready for some surprises?! Just kidding. Leaks on top of leaks on top of leaks suggest that Google will announce the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones as well as a new Google Home Mini, a new Chromebook, and a new Daydream headset at Wednesday’s big Made by Google event.

Google just revealed a $49 answer to Amazon's Echo Dot

The smaller size of course means it fits in more places — Google suggested using it as an alarm clock, or as a means of controlling a device by voice. It runs the same Google Assistant software that the original Google Home and Google Pixel phones use, meaning it personalizes answers to many of your questions. It knows what  you mean when you ask, "How do I get to work?", for instance.

Google just announced its new Pixel 2 XL smartphone

Google also added its own Portrait Mode that blurs the background and makes the subject stand out. Unlike other smartphones with a similar feature that use two cameras, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL do this with one camera. Portrait Mode also works with the front-facing camera for selfies.

New Sonos One speaker with Alexa announced for $199

The Sonos One is basically a Play:1 speaker that’s been refreshed for the era of voice-based assistants. The existing Play:1 already sounds better than the Amazon Echo and Google Home, so Sonos is no doubt hoping that consumers will favor its own offering over those products. The company could eventually update its other speakers like the pricier Play:5 in a similar way, but the One’s price point makes it the most sensible first step. A light on top of the Sonos One lights up when the microphone is listening and is off when the device isn’t; the mic and light are hardwired together, Sonos said, which is meant to be a privacy measure. In addition to Alexa, Sonos plans to add support for Google Assistant to the One in 2018.

Sonos said it would also release a version of Sonos One with Google Assistant, too, but not until 2018. That functionality will be available to anyone who bought an Alexa-powered Sonos One via a software update. Sonos says its goal is to create a "voice agnostic" platform, with room for multiple AI assistants on one speaker.

Google Pixelbook is the Chromebook that will make your MacBook jealous

The Pixelbook is also the first Chromebook from Google to include more than 64GB of RAM. Storage for the $999 Core i5 base model is 128GB, but for a premium you can get 256GB (Core i5, $1,199) or 512GB (Core i7, $1,649), showing that Google recognizes the use cases (like video editing or artwork) for a high-end device would mean more "local" computing, as opposed to doing everything through the cloud. The Pixelbook Pen is a $99 option.

Google's AI is no smarter than a first grader, study says

To evaluate how smart an intelligent system is (or has become), its ability to "acquire, master, create and feedback knowledge" needs to be tested, wrote the researchers. In 2014, the IQ of 50 AI systems was rated. The systems included Google's AI, Siri and Chinese search engine Baidu. Three humans, ages 18, 12 and 6, were also rated. When the researchers tested the AI systems again in 2016, they found that Google was the smartest and improved the fastest (from an IQ of 26.5 to 47.28), but it wasn't enough to beat even a 6-year-old, who came in with a score of 55.5.

A Stranger Things video game has crept onto mobile from the Upside Down

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. Effort has clearly gone into Stranger Things: The Game and the 80s influence that permeates the TV show is absolutely present in the game, with 16 bit visuals that are definitely inspired by the RPG adventure titles of the period.

We're learning more about how Russia weaponized Facebook, Twitter, and Google — and it was remarkably easy

Facebook, for its part, said it plans to strengthen its review process for political ads and will begin disclosing which pages purchase them moving forward. But the company acknowledged last month that, because many of the ad purchased could be made electronically with no human interaction, it still doesn't know the full extent of the ads purchased by Russia-linked accounts.

Facebook won't release Russia-linked ads publicly despite call to do so by US investigators

Facebook won't publicly release the roughly 3,000 ads linked to Russia and purchased on its platform despite calls to do so by congressional investigators on Wednesday, a person close to the company told Business Insider.

Gallery: 10 ways technology is changing disaster response

One of the biggest challenges of a natural, or man-made, disaster is finding survivors and assessing conditions in inaccessible areas. Drones can help first responders and recovery teams find those trapped by floodwaters and debris, point out particularly dangerous areas, and provide situational awareness that those on the ground would typically have to wait for a helicopter to provide.

Google Home Mini makes voice controls fun-size

I'm disappointed the Mini doesn't have any extra physical tricks, but you'll be able to control any Chromecast speakers with a voice command, as you could with the Home. It'll be able to take advantage of today's updates to the Assistant as well. For example, ask Google to find your phone, and it'll call it. Your phone will ring even if it's on silent. You'll also be able to broadcast a message to all other Google Home devices in the house.
