The current state of Bitcoin and Ethereum

In its current state, Bitcoin isn’t much more than a speculation vehicle, something to be bought and sold on exchanges (whose trades happen off-chain and therefore aren’t affected by the long confirmation times). Few people need to use it. There aren’t many companies building on it. It’s not even useable as payment anymore. But maybe it doesn’t have to be either. Maybe we should be looking at Bitcoin and other coins and tokens as an entirely new asset class, something we don’t fully understand the implications of yet.

Linux Pioneer Munich Confirms Switch To Windows 10 - Slashdot

The German city of Munich, once seen as a open-source pioneer, has decided to return to Windows. Windows 10 will be rolled out to about 29,000 PCs at the city council, a major shift for an authority that has been running Linux for more than a decade. From a report: Back in 2003 the council decided to to switch to a Linux-based desktop, which came to be known as LiMux, and other open-source software, despite heavy lobbying by Microsoft. But now Munich will begin rolling out a Windows 10 client from 2020, at a cost of about Euro 50m ($59.6m), with a view to Windows replacing LiMux across the council by early 2023. Politicians who supported the move at a meeting of the full council today say using Windows 10 will make it easier to source compatible applications and hardware drivers than it has been using a Linux-based OS, and will also reduce costs associated with running Windows and LiMux PCs side-by-side.

While he agrees that having multiple layers of security in the kernel is a good idea, certain ways of implementing it are not, in particular if it annoys users and developers by killing processes that break users' machines and wreck core kernel code. Because ultimately, if there are no users, there's not much point in having a supremely secure kernel, Torvalds contends.

Hawaii senator wants net neutrality to be the next big issue

Who do you mean then? Schatz: Congress. We have to demand a level of fluency on and commitment to these issues. No joyous holiday for Amazon as workers go on strike in Italy

The number of orders Amazon receives on Black Friday may seem little compared to Alibaba's 1.48 billion shoppers  this Singles' Day , but the online retailer still has to more than double its staff strength to cope with higher demand. Amazon employs 1,600 permanent staff at its Piacenza site in Northern Italy, but brings up its staff strength to 4,000 every year during the shopping season. The hub opened when Amazon launched its platform in Italy in 2010. Workers are paid a monthly average of 1,300 euros (about $1,541), according to FT.

More Than a Million Pro-Repeal Net Neutrality Comments Were Likely Faked - Slashdot

NY Attorney General Schneiderman estimated that hundreds of thousands of Americans' identities were stolen and used in spam campaigns that support repealing net neutrality. My research found at least 1.3 million fake pro-repeal comments, with suspicions about many more. In fact, the sum of fake pro-repeal comments in the proceeding may number in the millions. In this post, I will point out one particularly egregious spambot submission, make the case that there are likely many more pro-repeal spambots yet to be confirmed, and estimate the public position on net neutrality in the "organic" public submissions. [The key findings include:] 1. One pro-repeal spam campaign used mail-merge to disguise 1.3 million comments as unique grassroots submissions. 2. There were likely multiple other campaigns aimed at injecting what may total several million pro-repeal comments into the system. 3. It's highly likely that more than 99% of the truly unique comments were in favor of keeping net neutrality.

Houseflies Are More Capable of Spreading Disease Than We Realized

New research published in Scientific Reports shows that two common flies—houseflies and blowflies—are capable of carrying hundreds of different bacteria—a good portion of which are harmful to humans. Flies are born from fecal matter and rot, so this isn’t a complete surprise, but it’s the first study to analyze the gut contents of these insects in detail, and evaluate the ability of flies to carry and deliver germs. Flies like to hang around humans, as we’re all painfully aware, so these findings are a bit troublesome.

The Best Dishes to Make With Your Thanksgiving Leftovers

First, fold some shredded cheese, chives, and an egg into the mashed potatoes. As Kelly Senyei points out in the link above, you could add in some shredded turkey or diced ham, too. Take them out, sprinkle more cheese on top, and stick them back in the oven for a few minutes, just enough for the top layer of cheese to melt and coat the top of the muffin.
