Apple's Organizational Crossroads - Stratechery by Ben Thompson

Unlike many, I’m not bothered that Apple sells multiple variations of iPhone, iPads, etc. Scaling to variations is simply a matter of money and experience, which Apple has in spades. Services, though, are a fundamentally different problem that require a fundamentally different organization. If Apple is serious about services, then Cook’s promise that Apple would stay “extremely focused” is an empty one, and the insistence on a single type of organizational structure changes from enhancing Apple’s quality to actively detracting. 6

Volvo will test self-driving cars on the public next year

Volvo has been working on its autonomous vehicle program for several years now , but there's only so much you can learn from testing tech in controlled conditions . While the company has run trials on public roads before , it's now planning to take engineers and technicians out of the equation to see how regular road users take to self-driving cars. As part of its ongoing "Drive Me" project, Volvo is going to put real people behind the wheels of "semi-autonomous" vehicles from early next year , in order to understand how they are suited to everyday scenarios like doing the school run and picking up the weekly grocery shop.

Nintendo delays new 'Zelda' to 2017, announces NX version

There's good news and bad for Nintendo's upcoming Legend of Zelda open-world title for the Wii U console. First the bad: It's been delayed again, so it won't arrive now until 2017. The good news is that it's going to come out on the next-gen Nintendo NX console, which, by the way, Nintendo just revealed . In a (roughly translated) tweet , Nintendo Japan says that it pushed back the game "for further quality improvement," adding that it will be released "simultaneously" on the Nintendo NX.

The Magicians Is a Master Class in Book Adaptation

“That whole sequence is right out of the books, and I was a little surprised they went there, especially for a primetime television show. It was also one of those instances where a lot of readers I’ve spoken to have been really disturbed by it, that it went to that length. … I’m still not quite sure what I think of it. … One of the main things that a lot of female readers have pointed out—I think correctly—is that [Grossman’s] male characters never face the same consequences as the female ones do, and there’s really this disparity between them. … I thought his response to it was—I was satisfied by it, but I know of some people who heard it and were like, ‘Well, I don’t really buy it.'”

Comcast is reportedly in talks to buy DreamWorks Animation

In the past Dreamworks Animation has been mentioned as a possible purchase for companies including Fox, Hasbro and Softbank , but now reports say it's in talks with Comcast. The Wall Street Journal first reported the discussions, claiming Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg is courting an offer from the cable behemoth of over $3 billion. The live action arm of Dreamworks, now renamed Amblin Studios, is distributed by Comcast's Universal Pictures which could bring the two back together in a way after the animation arm spun off on its own in 2004. Also, as The Hollywood Reporter mentions, Universal is already home to Illumination Entertainment, which created Despicable Me and Minions , and sees the two as a competitor to Disney/Pixar.

Microsoft, Lumia and Windows Phone: Where now? | ZDNet

It's hard to see the smartphone market as anything other than a two-horse (Android and iOS) race right now. But that might not always be the case. It's still unclear how the PC and the smartphone will evolve and merge over the next few years, for example -- especially in the business market. Smartphones are becoming more powerful, so perhaps something like Continuum (Canonical has similar plans for Ubuntu) could start to gain traction. It makes sense for Microsoft to keep Windows Phone bumping along just in case, in a couple of years' time, a gap opens up that gives it a way back. A Surface phone, if it ever arrives, may help with that, but the chances of a quick turnaround in the Lumia's fortunes look slim.

Why the Rent vs. Buy Debate Is Completely Pointless

All of these points are valid, and I considered them in my own decision, too. The thing is, though, there’s a huge amount of grey area—individual factors— in all of them, so it doesn’t make sense to assert that either decision is the best decision. These factors are important, but the debate that comes with them is useless because the answer hinges on specifics: rent prices, interest rates, and so on. Buying a home can indeed be a bad financial move, but for many people, it isn’t.

Ford, Google and Uber form a group to push for self-driving cars

In some ways, this is more of a defensive measure than an attempt to fast-track new technology. The companies are worried that state-level legislation will make it difficult to build self-driving cars that you can legally use in every state. For example, California has proposed rules that would require controls and a licensed driver at the helm in case of an emergency -- Google doesn't like that this would render the cars useless for disabled people. The NHTSA is generally on the Coalition's side (it wants to avoid a "patchwork" of rules), but the group's members aren't willing to leave anything to chance.

Nintendo's 'Miitomo' app passes 10 million users

It could be argued -- and my colleague Nicole has -- that Nintendo's app is a social network in and of itself. Although it differs in many ways, Miitomo employs the same hook of Twitter and Facebook likes by rewarding you with coins for answering questions or sharing photos. And in that way, it's certainly doing better at carving out a slice of the market than other app-based networks like Path.

Nintendo will have only one playable game at E3 2016: Zelda for Wii U (not even the NX version)

The publisher revealed that it will have only one playable game at E3 2016, and that is the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo says that it wants to provide attendees “complete immersion” with Zelda, and that’s why it will have nothing else for the Wii U or the 3DS on the show floor. But this is a bit strange considering that Nintendo is also planning to launch the followup to the Wii U, the NX project, in March . And it’s even crazier that Nintendo announced that it is delaying Zelda because it is bringing a version to the NX.

Overall, I’m still going to keep my Nexus but that doesn’t mean that the Galaxy S7 isn’t a great phone. In fact, I think it’s the best phone you can buy right now, especially if you have already owned Samsung phones and are used to some of their quirks. It’s a gorgeous phone, one that I would be ashamed to put a case on but almost definitely would have to. Make no mistake, you’ll be paying nearly $700 for this phone and almost $800 for it’s edged brethren, and that’s no small amount of money but if you have to live with a phone for two or more years, I don’t think you can go wrong with this one.
