This is Microsoft's $400 Surface Go

I had the chance to go hands-on with the device before its unveiling, and there’s a lot to like. The basics: it’s a 10-incher with an 1800 x 1200 pixel display, it weighs half a kilo (1.15 lbs), and starts at $400 – unfortunately sans the keyboard, as usual. Still, that’s $100 less than the Surface 3 started at, making it the cheapest of Microsoft’sdevices in this lineup yet.

This new dual-platform malware targets both Windows and Linux systems

While WellMess is far from the first malware to run on Linux systems, the perceived security of Linux distributions as not being a significant enough target for malware developers should no longer be considered the prevailing wisdom, as cross-compilation on Golang will ease malware development to an extent for attackers looking to target Linux desktop users. As with Windows and macOS, users of Linux on the desktop should install some type of antivirus software in order to protect against malware such as WellMess.

3 signs you need to quit your IT job right now

However, there are some circumstances under which you should try to tough it out in your current position for a bit longer, Caplan said. Ideally, you should try to stay at least 12 months in one position, to show stability. A change in leadership is another reason to stay on, as it could mean a positive change in terms of your own career advancement or work culture. It's also best to look for a new job while you're still working in your current position, rather than after you quit, Caplan said. This allows you to maintain your current income, and appear more desirable to potential employers.

13 AT&T’s Troubling Plan to Change HBO | Hacker News

> I'm not really talking about how large of a selection either platform has, either. I don't think they should even directly compete. I don't think you can avoid the quantity argument, especially if you're going to hold up The Wire and The Sopranos, two shows that wrapped years before Netflix even got into the content game. Yes Netflix doesn't have any original content I've seen as good as The Wire or The Sopranos but they pair their many A- and B+ shows with the best of AMC (Breaking Bad, Mad Men) and British TV (Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders, UK Office), along with most of FX and Showtime's catalog and a large number of current and classic standouts (Twin Peaks, Fawlty Towers, Arrested Development, Cheers, etc.). If you want to watch high quality TV, there's a good argument that Netflix is absolutely where it's at. And if you're also interested in any kind of genre/non-highbrow TV, Netflix absolutely swamps HBO in pretty much every category. reply

How to Downgrade from iOS 11.4.1, iOS 11.4 to iOS 11.4 Beta to Jailbreak iPhone

There are two different ways for you to downgrade your iPhone or iPad to iOS 11.4 beta 3 from iOS 11.4 or any beta release of iOS 12. One of them will retain your user data, while the other will wipe your device completely clean. Irrespective of which method you follow, remember that the downgrading window is only open until Apple is signing the beta firmware so be quick.

Why you really don't want just one vendor running an open source project

No, Jacks isn't dredging up the "Can you make money in open source?" debate. As Jacks wrote that "open core is the dominant business model used by the most successful commercial OSS companies."

Hackers and cops hate Apple's iOS 11.4.1 update | Cult of Mac

The goal of this change is to protect the user’s privacy, but deactivating the lightning port after an hour of non-use might inconvenience some users. “If you don’t first unlock your password-protected iOS device—or you haven’t unlocked and connected it to a USB accessory within the past hour—your iOS device won’t communicate with the accessory or computer, and in some cases, it might not charge. You might also see an alert asking you to unlock your device to use accessories,” warns Apple .

21 awesome video games you can finish in one evening

It's rare that a game with the production values of Ground Zeroes is as short as Ground Zeroes. That's because this game is something of a demo for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. But interestingly some people prefer this one. One reason for that is the brevity -- you can play and finish this game in a matter of two hours -- but there's so much to explore if you have more time than that.

How to use Apple's new Shortcuts app | Cult of Mac

In use, the new app is much the same as the old one. You drag modular actions from the source list on the left, and drop them into the timeline on the right. These new shortcuts can be run inside the app, from the share sheet, from an app-like icon on the home screen, and from a Today widget. The look of the app is a little cleaner, and more Apple-like, but it really is a rework of the Workflow app, and not a whole new thing. And that’s great, because Workflow was and is awesome.

HomePod will never become the iPhone of smart speakers | Cult of Mac

Could Apple catch up, or will the “never” of our title turn out to literally be the case? A lot will depend on how it chooses to pursue the smart speaker market going forward. Right now, Apple seems reluctant to even throw its hat in the ring and admit that HomePod is intended to be a smart speaker, as opposed to a regular speaker with Siri capabilities.
