SpaceX Rocket to Fire Hewlett Packard Supercomputer Into Orbit

Other computing systems used in space have to be replaced frequently because the difficult conditions caused them to degrade, a spokesman for Hewlett Packard said. Why I Was Fired by Google

I was fired by Google this past Monday for a document that I wrote and circulated internally raising questions about cultural taboos and how they cloud our thinking about gender diversity at the company and in the wider tech sector. I suggested that at least some of the male-female disparity in tech could be attributed to biological differences (and, yes, I said that bias against women was a factor too). Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai declared that portions of my statement violated the company’s code of conduct and “cross...

See the future Firefox right now

As with any prerelease software, Firefox Nightly 57 is meant for developers and will likely exhibit strange and unstable behavior from time to time. Also, there is no guarantee that the final release will look like what you see in the current version of Nightly. For example, I have read reports that the search box next to Firefox's URL bar may be on the chopping block. It's part of the design of the current Nightly build but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets dropped between now and November since most web users have grown accustomed to entering their search queries right in the URL bar. Just as you can with the current version of Firefox, however, you can customize which elements are displayed at the top of Firefox Nightly 57, including the search box.

Netflix is in "active discussions" with Disney about keeping Marvel and "Star Wars" films after 2019 , when new Disney and Pixar movies will stop appearing on the streaming service, a senior executive said late on Thursday. Disney announced on Tuesday that it was pulling new Disney and Pixar films from Netflix , starting with new releases in 2019. It will start putting the movies on a new Disney-branded online service that year. Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger told analysts the company had not yet decided where it would distribute superhero films from Marvel Studios and movies from "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm, which the company owns, at that time. Netflix is still in discussions with Disney about retaining rights to stream Marvel and Lucasfilm releases after 2019, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told Reuters.

A group of Uber investors want Benchmark Capital kicked off the board after the firm sued former CEO Travis Kalanick

The request comes one day after Benchmark filed a lawsuit against former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick over allegations of fraud. Benchmark claimed in its suit that it would never have approved a 2016 expansion of Uber's board that allowed Kalanick to fill a board seat had it been aware of the controversy surrounding Kalanick and of Uber's cultural problems. The suit accuses the former CEO of mismanagement and packing the board with supporters.

FCC extends net neutrality comment period by two weeks

Granting a two week extension gives people more time to file “reply comments,” which are meant to respond to what people filed during the first phase of the comment period, which closed in July. Our 22 favorite shows to watch on a 4K TV - Page 15

Apple TV doesn't support 4K yet, but Roku, Fire TV and Chromecast all have UHD channels (available on some, but not all, of their devices). You'll also probably need to connect your TV to Ethernet to take advantage of its full capabilities, unless you have blazing-fast Wi-Fi. Netflix has started shooting its originals in higher-res formats (like 5K and 6K) and mastering them in 4K for streaming. Frequently though, studios still render scenes with lots of special effects in 2K and scale them up after the fact. So, if the Demogorgon looks a little funny, that's why.

Our Surface computers don't break after a couple of years, insists Microsoft | ZDNet

Just when you thought you knew what a Microsoft device was all about, Redmond throws a curveball and decides it needs to put Windows 10 S on the device. With a semi locked-down environment that Microsoft says allows for more secure and hassle-free usage, the Surface Laptop could be considered to behave like a very powerful and much more flexible Chromebook, but it is also more than that: It's a proper install of Windows 10 that is packed with training wheels.

AMD or Intel: Which is the right desktop processor for you? | ZDNet

While the mainstream is currently dominated by Intel Core i5 chips, many of Intel's offerings in this bracket don't have hyperthreading, which means you get one thread per core, as opposed to AMD's Ryzen offering which all offer two threads per core (if you're confused by threads, just think "more threads = better").

Netflix's 'Gypsy' won't be getting a second season

Gypsy was initially poised as another prestige drama for Netflix -- with a star-filled cast including Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, and some intriguingly dark material. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to its potential, according to early reviews. Now, it looks like Netflix is ready to pull the plug. The company has canceled Gypsy , even though it was discussing a second season with producers, according to Deadline . Sources at Netflix also confirmed to us separately that it won't be returning.

SoundCloud stays afloat with emergency investment, as CEO steps aside

SoundCloud today announced that it has closed the investor round necessary to keep it going for the foreseeable future . As part of the agreement, Alex Ljung will step aside and former Vimeo leader Kerry Trainor will become SoundCloud’s new CEO, with Mike Weissman as COO. Ljung will stay on to “fully focus on the role of the chairman and the long-term.” Billboard reports the exact amount of the investment is $169.5 million, which, says Ljung, makes this infusion “the largest financing round in the history of SoundCloud.”

The best smart TV system in an affordable 4K TV

Fire up the S405 and you won't be greeted with something from an HDMI input, like whatever channel your cable box is tuned to. Instead you'll see a grid of app icons, much like your phone's home screen. A few of those icons indeed lead to HDMI inputs (and you can rename them "cable box," "Xbox" or whatever), but most are apps. I love the system's simplicity and customization, although I wish one-third of the screen weren't occupied by a big ad.

Report: Tesla autonomous semi-trucks will move in platoons, prototype coming soon

One of the most interesting autonomous features mentioned in the report is the ability of the trucks to platoon behind a lead vehicle, forming a caravan to their final destination. This type of technology has been seen by some as a forerunner to full autonomy, as it could allow for one human driver in the lead, with multiple autonomous trucks following behind him or her.

Opinion | Sundar Pichai Should Resign as Google’s C.E.O.

That is a blatantly dishonest characterization of the memo. Damore wrote nothing like that about his Google colleagues. Either Pichai is unprepared to understand the research (unlikely), is not capable of handling complex data flows (a bad trait in a C.E.O.) or was simply too afraid to stand up to a mob.

Honeywell's basic security cam has surprisingly more to it

When compared alongside some other security cameras in a similar price range -- the iSmartAlarm Spot and the Zmodo Pivot -- the C1 doesn't stand out very much. But it has a couple of bonus features: motion zones and geofencing. Motion zones let you customize what areas in your camera's field of view actually detect and alert you to unexpected activity. Geofencing automatically turns your camera on and off whenever you leave and return home (based on your phone's location). Honeywell is also working on smart home integrations for this camera.  Honeywell's Lyric T5 thermostat already works with Apple HomeKit , Amazon Alexa , IFTTT and Google Home , so hopefully similar pairings are in the works for their C1 camera.

This beautiful phone needs more oomph

The octa-core processor is where the phone starts to fall down. Simply swiping around the Android interface is reasonably nippy, but opening the camera takes longer than I'd like and HDR photos take several seconds to save. Apps can be a bit sluggish to open, too, although I didn't find any performance problems when using the apps. I could quickly tweak photos in Snapseed, for example, and games like Sonic and NOVA: Legacy played perfectly well enough to keep you entertained on your commute.

Of course, the talent pool is limited by those agree to take SquarePeg’s assessments in the first place. The 10 Best iOS 11 Features for iPhone

Apple finally seems to be confident enough in iCloud to give it the responsibility to sync your all your iMessages, your personal Siri intelligence and scanned metadata in Photos app. This is a big step for Apple and it could be the end of a lot of frustrations that were caused because multiple Apple devices always seemed to be their own little islands of data. Apple is of course playing catch up here with competitors like Google but still, it’s a much welcome feature.

The last eclipse to cross the entire U.S. was in 1918, so our energy demands and technology look a bit different these days. Phil Mihlmester, an energy expert and executive vice president of the global energy consulting group ICF, called the upcoming eclipse "a test case" to see how power suppliers handle the change in resources.

You can’t customize ads to each target audience and by device if they’re all in one ad set. Ads that are customized for your target audiences are much more likely to convert and get a lower cost per click. Additionally, mobile ads and desktop ads typically should be different. For example, mobile ads tend to have less text and user behavior for mobile differs greatly compared to desktop.
