Apple TV (2015) Preview - CNET

Apple's new Apple TV has a familiar feel, if you've used Amazon's Fire TV or Android TV. Siri's voice search reminded me of what Google and Amazon have already explored. Searching by genre or year ("show me romantic comedies from the 70s") worked great. And the new remote control is a big step up: added buttons, a comfortable top clickpad for navigation, and an accelerometer and gyro for simple motion controls in games. I played Asphalt 8 and steered reasonably well through a game, and scrolled and clicked through apps and menus.

Apple’s New iPad Pro Is a Jumbo Tablet for Work, Not Play

What all of these features share in common is that, combined with a stylus and Bluetooth keyboard, they make a much stronger argument for the iPad’s place in an enterprise setting—if not as a primary computer than at least as one that lets you pick up where you left off back home. It potentially unlocks an entirely new suite of iPad customers, a well Apple surely wants to tap to help stem the decline of its tablet line-up sales. “Pro” describes the device, but also the intended user.

Gazelle sees iPhone trade-in offers double into iPhone 6s event, raises cash payouts for Verizon models

The nation's leading electronics buyback service said Tuesday that customers are requesting cash payout offers for their old iPhones at nearly twice the volume as last year. It also raised payouts for recent Verizon iPhones to as much as $481 for an iPhone 6+, $426 for an iPhone 6, and $206 for an iPhone 5s. Gazelle, an AppleInider sponsor and one of two recommended trade-in partners, said it's was serving nearly 4 payout offers per second to customers on its website leading into Wednesday's iPhone 6s introduction, which is up 95%, of nearly double the amount of offers seen the day before last year's iPhone 6 unveiling. On Monday, the last full day for which the Gazelle has stats, iPhone 5s trade-ins represented 41% of the total trade in volume. The iPhone 5s was also the most traded-in iPhone over the past week, accounting for 35% of all volume, while iPhone 6 trade-ins accounted for 27% and iPhone 6+ another 15%. In total, iPhone trade-ins rose over 120% for the week. Over the past two weeks, the company has also seen Apple TV trade-ins spike 85% and iPad trade-ins rise 15%, as there are expectations that Apple will unveil updates to those product lines on Wednesday as well.

iOS 9 will be available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch September 16th

To help store all of those newfangled Live Photos , iCloud pricing has been revised to 50GB for 99 cents a month, 200GB for $3/month and 1TB for a $10 monthly fee. If you're looking to make the switch from Android, Apple's new "Move to iOS" app will arrive alongside iOS 9 as well to lend a hand moving your stuff over to a new phone/tablet. In terms of compatible devices, the new OS will play nice with iPhone 4s and later, fifth-gen iPod Touch and later, iPad 2 and later and iPad Mini and later when it arrives in just a few days.

Apple will stream its iPhone event to Windows 10 users

Apple uses HTTP Live Streaming technology (HLS) that is part of QuickTime, Safari, OS X, and iOS. It's a protocol implemented by Apple and suggested as a standard, but it's not one that many other companies have used widely. While iTunes for Windows already supports HLS, Apple has always kept its stream limited to the web for Safari and iOS devices. Microsoft implemented support for HLS as part of the Microsoft Edge browser, allowing Apple to stream its event to more than  75 million Windows 10 machines next month. If you've not upgraded to Windows 10 yet, you'll need to use VLC or another third-party app on September 9th.

Hackaday Prize Worldwide DC

I certainly understand the need to cover costs, but it seems to me that $225 for the Kicad class is going to be kind of a hard sell for those of us who want/need to use free software, and the dearth of signups so far suggests that I'm not the only one who feels that way. I live very close to the venue, but it's hard to swallow the cost when there are other resources available (for example, there's a free Udemy class on Kicad, and there's the series from Contextual Electronics). Also, the requirement to bring a laptop is a deterrent for those who only have desktop computers. How about some HaD scholarships? Or, perhaps some work/study grants if there are any chores that need doing?

Force field: Apple's pressure-based screens promise a world beyond cold glass

Mobiquity's technical adviser Robert McCarthy points to several potential uses of Apple's technology - measuring the force of touch when entering a password, say, to indicate how confident the user is of their selection, or keying in a numeric passcode using different pressure levels as an extra layer of security.

Google Partners With CloudFlare, Fastly, Level 3 And Highwinds To Help Developers Push Google Cloud Content To Users Faster

Google shut down its free  PageSpeed service  last month and with that, it also stopped offering the easy to use content delivery network (CDN) service that was part of that tool. Unlike some of its competitors, Google doesn’t currently offer its own CDN service for developers who want to be able to host their static assets as close to their users as possible. Instead, the company now relies on partners like Fastly to offer CDN services.

Apple launches iPad Pro with 12.9" display and a stylus

That’s an expensive upsell, particularly given Microsoft is often chastised for not including its keyboard cover and stylus with all of its Surface tablets. Still the iPad Pro will likely work fine as a standalone tablet given the plethora of existing iPad apps, whereas those accessories are seen as more essential on the Surface, given its desktop OS.

iPad Mini 4 is Apple's barely discussed gaming device champ

So for all the talk of Apple TV representing a bright gaming future for Apple, for the time being the Mini line still stands as the company's premiere device for interactive entertainment. It might not be for everyone, but it's always been a very well-rounded tablet that offers the right mix of power and portability for gamers on the go. From the way things look now, the Mini 4 carries that tradition forward in all the right ways.

Apple's halves iCloud storage prices to $0.99 a month for 50GB

Apple has announced a new pricing scheme for its iCloud storage, halving the prices of some options. 50GB of cloud storage data now costs $0.99 a month (compared to the previous lowest plan of 20GB for the same price), while 200GB costs $2.99 a month and 1TB of storage will set you back $9.99 a month. (These two options previously cost $3.99 and $19.99 respectively). It's not clear whether the old 500GB plan will continue, or if Apple has dropped this option completely.

Apple Introduces The iPhone 6S And iPhone 6S Plus

Today, Apple has unveiled the latest generation of the iPhone in the form of the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. Rumors have been swirling for the past few months, with suggestions that Apple would integrate a Force Touch Display, update the devices’ cameras, and use a more powerful processor.

37
Apple is launching a new iPad mini 4 for $399

The new iPad mini is slightly thinner and lighter than last year's model, and Apple also upgraded the mini's back camera (if that sort of thing is important to you). It now sports an 8-megapixel shooter; in all likelihood, it's the same camera found on the iPad Air 2. Otherwise, the iPad mini 4 is just what you expect: it comes in space gray, silver and gold, includes storage starting at 16GB going all the way up to 128GB and keeps the same excellent Retina display the device has featured since 2013. As with last year, pricing starts at $399 for the 16GB model. This is the update we had hoped we'd see for the iPad mini last year -- aside from adding Touch ID, the iPad mini 3 was identical to the model that preceded it. And with Apple keeping the iPad mini 2 on sale at a pretty significant discount, it was hard to recommend last year's model.

38
The biggest thing holding back the Apple Watch is the iPhone

Luckily, people don't seem to mind if the Apple Watch gets bigger in size. Wristly's survey also asked participants about their opinions on any size changes to the Apple Watch's hardware, and the majority didn't mind if the size increased. Thinness was the main priority, which could still be impacted by adding in more chips for features like a standalone data connection.

Adblock Plus releases its web browser for iOS

All of these factors mean a certain amount of instability for publishers, as ad-blocking software becomes increasingly mainstream and deprives companies of vital ad revenue from online traffic. Firms like Adblock Plus, however, simply say they want to improve users' mobile experience. The company's co-founder Till Faida said in a press statement: "It has been very important for us to deliver our ad-blocking app to our iOS users who do more and more web surfing from mobile devices. With the popularity of the iOS platform in places like the US, we considered it critical to offer an app in the Apple App Store. We’re thankful to Apple for working with us on this project and we look forward to their new iOS 9, which will give web developers additional ad-blocking tools."
