On average, we spend about one third of our lives sleeping. During some of that time, we dream. While we sleep we can get rest and refreshment for our day to come. Basically, dreams are our way to relax and let our minds become lost in a distant world. While dreaming, we can interact with different people, places and things.
Technically speaking, dreams are a mass hallucination. A dream is a hallucination that is also a fantastic journey into our dream worlds, dreams can free us from stress and attempts to distract us from certain habits or future problems.
Dreams help us to understand ourselves if we know how to interpret them. Dream analysis is a very powerful tool. We can find deeper understanding of ourselves or reveal secret hidden feelings to something that only a dream interpretation can find.
As we think of the dreams we have to ask why they occur. There are several explanations for why we dream. It is a fact that as we all sleep we constantly pass through cycles of sleep and wakefulness. During each cycle, our minds are active. When we are asleep, is not obvious how our minds are at work, to keep the mind active during sleep we dream. These dreams if interpreted correctly can reveal a lot about our personalities. Tips for proper dream interpretation can be found below.
Some of the earliest examples of dream interpretation can be found in the Bible. Joseph interpreted dreams for a cupbearer and a baker. And Daniel interpreted dreams for the King. Even the prophets received many of their prophecies through dreams.
A little later, the Greek philosophers also used dream analysis. The most famous of these Greek philosophers was Aristotle. He spoke of the illusion of sense-perception, the malfunctioning of the senses which allows dreams occur. Aristotle later suggested that dreams are formed by the disruption of the body.
Then in the middle of the 19th century, another philosopher came along. A man by the name of Sigmund Freud really revolutionized dream analysis. He believed that the analysis of dreams was a very useful and powerful tool in the uncovering of unconscious thoughts and desires. Freud believed that "the purpose of dreams is to enable us to fulfill the fantasies of instinctual urges that society judges unacceptable."
