401(k) Retirement Plan

landon.key posted this on 05.03.2008 at 12:36 AM with a worthy factor of 2
401(k)s got their start back in 1978, when the IRS established a new provision to allow employees to defer some of their compensation into an account with their employer. The beauty is that in many cases, your employers will match your contributions to a certain point.

No Thain, No Gain

Taking on a wounded bull was the last thing John Thain needed. He'd already played Mr. Fixit at the New York Stock Exchange, where he put back together a storied institution rocked by a front-running scandal and the ouster of a richly paid chief executive. Merrill Lynch had similar troubles but was in far worse shape.

How to Read a Balance Sheet 101

Landon Key posted this on 04.16.2008 at 04:33 PM with a worthy factor of 2
Knowing what is on the balance sheet is crucial to understanding whether or not the company you are investing in is capable of generating real value for shareholders. It is the balance sheet that can tell you if a company has enough money to continue to fund its own growth or whether it is going to have to take on debt, issue debt, or issue more stock in order to keep on keeping on.

What job woes mean to you

The loss of nearly a quarter-million jobs so far this year and a jump in the unemployment rate means the debate over whether there is a recession is pretty much over. "There is a recession. The question now is how deep and how long," said Lakshman Achuthan, the managing director of the Economic Cycle Research Institute. And he thinks the economy could get worse.

What the Fed’s interest rate cut really means

Sadly, it looks like the Chairman of the Federal Reserve ignored my open letter last week and decided to cut the federal funds rate by three quarters of a point to 2.25%. Of course, if you’re watching the news right now, everyone is saying that this dramatic cut is a good thing. After all, the Dow is surging on this supposedly great news.

Just Stop, Ben Bernanke

Each month, I cringe as I write my rent check. The D.C. lifestyle is no cheap shindig. It takes careful planning to ensure I don't have to turn to debt to finance my spending habits, and it means I need to live in an apartment that fits my budget. After all, after a missed rent check or two, my landlord would throw me out...

How To Survive a Recession

Landon Key posted this on 03.15.2008 at 04:19 PM with a worthy factor of 3
If you thought the dot-com and 9/11 recession of 2000-2003 was bad, just wait for 2008. The U.S. dollar is already on life-support, credit debt is sky high, unemployment rates are up, the housing market is crashing, consumer spending is at an all time low, and this is just the beginning. Many economist's predict a severe recession as opposed to the mild economic "trough" of 5 years ago.

Are We Headed For a Recession? Who Cares?

Suppose Shiller's correct, and the U.S. is headed for a recession. Or maybe Hulbert has it right, and we've been in a recession for months. Does it ultimately matter? Should you alter your stock selection process? Should you sell off your stock holdings in favor of government bonds?

Will You Cash Out Before the Market Crashes?

Recessions do not last long. Since 1945, none of the 11 recessions on record lasted more than 16 months -- and none longer than eight months since 1982. Stocks do not all go down during recession. In reality, you can make a lot of money by investing when economic confidence is weak.
