MySpace, Facebook: Big Not Always Better

Landon Key posted this on 04.16.2008 at 10:48 PM with a worthy factor of 2
Though the larger sites let users create groups on any topic or interest, finding the right groups and identifying the most dedicated members can be daunting. What happens is a medium reaches a point where the users of it start to think it's interesting but it's too big, there are too many people, it's too difficult to find what I'm interested in?

10 Principles Of Effective Web Design

Landon Key posted this on 03.17.2008 at 06:18 PM with a worthy factor of 1
Usability and the utility, not the visual design, determine the success or failure of a web-site. Since the visitor of the page is the only person who clicks the mouse and therefore decides everything, user-centric design has become a standard approach for successful and profit-oriented web design. After all, if users can’t use a feature, it might as well not exist.

Google Analytics added a new benchmarking feature today. Users can now compare their site's performance to industry benchmarks, though only if they agree to share their data to help produce such aggregate benchmarks. Another feature added is the ability to see when your Google Audio ads run, in relation to your web site traffic.

Page View Metric Dying - But What Will Replace It?

Landon Key posted this on 02.28.2008 at 10:46 PM with a worthy factor of 1
The reasoning is simple enough: While unique visits and page views are useful in measuring how much incoming traffic a site has, it isn't exactly a good or accurate way of measuring impact or even engagement. You could have high incoming traffic (for example, any site that is hugely successful on social sites) but if there is an incredibly high exit rate...

We both enjoy and drown in news, blogs, podcasts, photos, videos and cool MySpace pages. And the problem is only going to get worse, as more and more people discover the new web.

Are you happy with the results people get back when they Google your name? If not, there are easy ways to monitor and guide what information is published about you online. Two years ago we covered how to have a say in what Google says about you, and more recently, and how to track down anyone online. But a rash of social media sites have arisen that give you more tools to help you.

Are You Testing the Effectiveness of Your Website?

keyj63 posted this on 02.14.2008 at 07:42 PM with a worthy factor of 2
It’s important advice - especially for startups - because we often live in a bubble building our web apps till our heart’s content, thinking we’ve just invented the next Google. It’s not that entrepreneurs don’t seek out advice, but whether we listen to it is another story. One of the biggest hindrances to taking advice (even our own) is time.
